“The Time Is Now” Book Study

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Small Groups are being organized to read and discuss <i>The Time is Now </i>by Sister Joan Chittister, a “rabble-rousing force of nature” for social justice and personal faith and spiritual fulfillment. The book draws on the wisdom of prophets, ancient and modern, to help confront the societal forces that oppress and silence the sacred voices among us.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Both an evening and daytime group are being formed led by Jo Naretto and Cinda Gorman. What we do with our time, money and energy matters; it is a witness to an increasingly materialistic and secular world. We give because God has supplied our needs. PCUSA Youth Triennium

<p>From July 27–31, LPC youth will combine with youth from other churches in the Presbytery of the Western Reserve and thousands of teens from around the country for the PC(USA)’s Triennium youth conference. High-school-age youth will go to Louisville, Kentucky for four days of worship, recreation, bible study, outreach and faith formation all around the theme of “As If We Were Dreaming.” The theme reminds us that dreams play an important role in the biblical narrative. It is often through dreams that God speaks to God’s beloved. In Psalms, God’s exiled people were all but without hope, wondering if God had forgotten them. But God restored their hope and brought them back home. The only way they could describe their experience was that it was <b>“as if we were dreaming”</b> (Psalm 126:1). LPC Youth Summer Retreat

<p><span style="color: #000000;">It’s almost time to register for the LPC youth summer retreat! On June 22-25 the youth will head to Hocking Hills and have a chance to get away from all the hassles of everyday life, strengthen friendships and dive deeper into their faith. We will have a daily devotional and evening campfire vespers. We will also play fun games, have campfires, soak in the hot tub, and hike to amazing caves and waterfalls. Youth may bring a friend. Adult Faith Formation: “Mission Malawi”

<p>Karen Byrne will return to give an update on the Malawi Prison Well that she spoke about at LPC last September. The well for the largest prison in Malawi was completed in January. Karen will give updates on the blessings that your gifts have provided for these impoverished inmates and their community.</p> <p>Unfortunately, this area was hit especially hard by the ongoing tropical cyclone Freddy. The homes and buildings in this area are built from sun-dried clay bricks. Due to massive flooding, entire villages have been wiped out and hundreds have perished. The need is great. Families typically live on dried corn from the year’s crop. All of this has been lost and the farmland devastated. Our contact, the prison chaplain Rev. Stanley, is currently safe, but his daughter lost her home. The kitchen wall of one of the prisons collapsed and killed four inmates. Rev. Stanley has provided their coffins so that they may be buried. Commissioned Pastor Karen Byrne will have pictures of the completed well and celebrations and the current devastation. <p><span style="color: #000000;">On Sunday, September 17 and 24, LPC Pastor Jim Butler will lead presentations on the evolving nature of the church as an institution. It began as small groups of Jesus’ mostly Jewish followers, centered in the Jerusalem Temple, who worshipped in local synagogues and also met for prayer, study and fellowship in homes. Three centuries later, the imperial church emerged, centered in Rome, which eventually fractured into three major categories — Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and thousands of Protestant traditions. North American Christians in all three categories are wondering, sometimes in fear and trembling, what is happening to the church/denomination/tradition to which I belong? Adult Faith Formation: Cynthia Rios, The Haven Home

<p><span style="color: #000000;">The Mission, Outreach and Justice Ministry feels strongly that supporting local organizations that care for unhoused persons will help us to follow Jesus faithfully. For the past two years, we have been providing evening meals for a nearby wintertime overflow shelter. </span><span style="color: #000000;">Now, we are exploring a stronger relationship with The Haven Home — an overflow shelter for women and children. Haven Home opened in 2017, and currently serves over 240 families each year. When space becomes available in more permanent housing, the families transition out on their journey to sustainable independence. The Board of Directors has made a decision that Haven Home will pivot from a temporary shelter to a family maternity home with a transformational environment designed to restore and build healthy family relationships and prepare them for independence.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Haven’s Executive Director, Cynthia Rios, will be our guest on Sunday, October 29 at 11:20 a.m. during Adult Faith Formation. <p><span style="color: #000000;">What does it mean to be a caregiver? Nearly one in five Americans provide unpaid care for someone 50 and older. Caring for a friend or loved one can be one of the greatest gifts one can give to another person; it can also be one of the greatest challenges. Every caregiving/care receiving relationship is unique. Days are often filled with a mixture of joy and sorrow, ups and downs, good days and simply bad days. Caregivers, as well as care receivers, know well the stresses and successes, anxious and more serene moments that can occur on almost a daily basis.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">We will explore the joys and challenges of caregiving. What are the issues, challenges and stress points? What are emotional and spiritual issues? Tuesday Evening Lenten Gathering

<p><span style="color: #000000;">LPC Pastor Jim Butler will present a four-part series on the intersection of partisan politics and evangelical theology using the research of Calvin </span><span style="color: #000000;">College history professor, Dr. Kristin Kobes Du Mez. In 2021, Dr. Du Mez published a <i>New York Times </i>best-selling book entitled, <i>Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation</i>, in which she carefully traces the actions of politicians and evangelical leaders to meld politics and evangelical religion into one powerful movement that began with Billy Sunday’s “muscular Christianity” and the iconic actor, John Wayne.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">The series will include a thorough discussion of evangelical and “fundamental” theology popularized by Billy Graham, James Dobson and Jerry Falwell. Adult Faith Formation – Mission Malawi Update

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Commissioned Pastor Karen Byrne will return on <b>February 25 </b>to give an update on the Malawi Prison Mission that our church has recently supported. During her last update, we learned of the devastation of farmland due to cyclone Freddy and impending famine. With your help, seeds, fertilizer and other assistance was provided to create prison farms. Rev. Chimesya wrote in gratitude, “You have done great things for my life and the prison ministry.” By June, Zomba Central Prison was able to cultivate a maize and vegetable garden. One of the officers told him that apart from feeding the inmates with delicious vegetables like tomatoes and onions, they had extended this blessing to the mental hospital and central hospital kitchens. </span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Rev. Chimesya also addressed the ninth international Citizens United for Rehabilitation of Errants (CURE) conference held in Nairobi. Ninety-five delegates from 28 countries and 12 African nations came together to further their agenda of human rights and prison reform efforts in the United States and the African continent as well as other countries throughout the world.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">By December, Malawi’s local currency had been devalued by 44% and prices for basic needs rose above 50%. Karen Byrne will give an update on the current conditions and needs. She is also preparing for Rev. Chimesya to visit Ohio this August. Adult Faith Formation – “The Acts of the Apostles”

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><i>The Jesus Movement Morphs into a New Religion</i></span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">LPC Pastor Jim Butler will lead a three-part series on the New Testament <i>Book of Acts</i> (aka “The Acts of the Apostles”) on Sundays, May 5, 12 and 19 in Wright Chapel following worship. The document is commonly understood as a memoir of the early years of Christian history, from the crucifixion of Jesus and the Easter “appearances” up to the martyrdoms of James, Peter and Paul (AD 62–68). Most scholars agree that it was written by Luke, a co-worker of Paul, as a companion volume to his Gospel.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;"><i>Acts </i>is full of very interesting stories of the scrapes and troubles the early Christian believers got into with religious and civil authorities as they took “the good news of God” to the world. Adult Faith Formation – New Perspectives on Paul and His Theology

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Several prominent Bible scholars are concluding that Paul’s theology has been misunderstood and wrongly interpreted through the lens of western Protestant theology, which began with Luther and Calvin. On Sundays, November 3 and 10, LPC Pastor Jim Butler will explore the recent research and conclusions of James Tabor on Paul, who called himself the “Apostle to the Gentiles.” Tabor is a scholar of biblical Greek and first century middle eastern religion whose doctoral thesis at the University of Chicago focused on Paul’s mystical experiences. Presbyterian Women Horizons Bible Study

<p><span style="color: #000000;">The 2024-25 Presbyterian Women Horizons Study <i>Let Justice Roll Down</i> is subtitled <i>God’s Call to Care for Neighbors and All Creation. </i>All women from the LPC family are invited to join us on Monday evenings for this once-a-month opportunity to explore God’s call to “care for our neighbors and all creation.”</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">The group will meet the <b><i>third </i></b>Monday of each month from September through December. Adult Faith Formation – Visible Signs of Invisible Realities

<p><span style="color: #000000;">With the exception of Quakers (Friends), every Christian Church practices some form of baptism and communion. Depending on the church tradition, they have different names — Holy Baptism, Christening, Lord’s Supper, Eucharist, Holy Communion. Most Christians call them sacraments but some call them “rites” or “ordinances.” Most churches baptize infants and children, but not all. Some churches serve communion to small and/or unconfirmed children and to adults who are not church members, but most do not. Triennium Send-off

Exploring Origins

Worship in the Park

<p><span style="color: #000000;">We are excited to announce that our annual Gathering Day Sunday will be held at Lakewood Park as we kick off a new program year. The park is located at the intersection of Lake and Belle Avenues, two blocks north of the church.</span></p> <p><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Outdoor Worship Service with Holy Communion</span></strong></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">A simple and joyful outdoor worship service is planned for 10 a.m. under the oak trees overlooking beautiful Lake Erie. Hymns and special music will be accompanied by our enthusiastic guitarists. Pastor Butler’s sermon will reflect on God’s command to “have dominion over the earth” based on the first creation story, Genesis 1:26–30. Holy Communion will be served to the congregation while seated. Because park bench seating is limited, everyone is strongly encouraged to bring a portable chair or blanket. We will have some chairs available for those who have mobility issues.</span></p> <p><strong><span style="color: #000000;">Potluck Picnic</span></strong></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">Following the worship service, everyone is invited to enjoy picnic food in the air-conditioned Woman’s Pavilion at the north end of the main parking area. Adult Faith Formation – What Did Jesus Do?

<p><span style="color: #000000;">During our new 2025/2026 program year, our ministry of faith formation will focus on following the example and pathway of Jesus. Many are aware of the so-called “WWJD” question — “what would Jesus do?” It can help inform a person who wants to do the right thing — respond in a Christ-like way. Before we start looking at the implications of that question for us, it is important to understand what Jesus actually did — who he was, what he taught, the religious role(s) he assumed, and the theological basis of his ministry of healing and wholeness.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">On Sundays, September 14 and 21, Jim Butler will lead presentations that will help us to rediscover the Jesus of the Gospels and what he <i>did </i>as distinct from the theology that developed <i>about </i>him hundreds of years later. Adult Faith Formation – Peacemaking with Dr. Richard Watts

<p><span style="color: #000000;">The Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and annual offering had its start at LPC in the late 1970s during the ministry of the Rev. Richard Watts. The “cold war” was heating up and came near to a boil between President Ronald Reagan and USSR President Gorbachev. With a small group of LPC members and other local Lakewood residents, Dr. Watts started to explore ways the church could promote peace during an anxious time. The group grew into “Swords into Plowshares” (see Isaiah 2:4), a ministry endorsed by Northeast Ohio Presbytery of the Western Reserve. By January of 1980, Watts concluded his ministry at LPC in order to pursue peacemaking ministry and eventually became the first coordinator of the Presbyterian Church’s Peacemaking Program.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000;">To celebrate this 45^th anniversary, we have invited Dr. Watts to return to LPC and share his memories of how it all unfolded. Youth Triennium Recap

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Nineteen youth and five adults spent five days in Kentucky this summer at the Presbyterian Youth Triennium. They worshipped and dreamed with over 2,000 other teens from around the country. They also worked hard to benefit the surrounding community by preparing lunches and organizing a food and supply pantry for the needy at Wayside Christian Ministry. Adult Faith Formation – “Deep Thoughts”

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Do you remember that skit on Saturday Night Live called “Deep Thoughts with Jack Handey?” Jack would present dark and sarcastic statements that were anything but deep and probing, but usually very funny. On the four Sundays in January, LPC Pastor Jim Butler will explore several deep thoughts and questions that people have been wondering about for centuries, whether they are Christians, agnostics, or followers of other religions. For example, “Why are we here?” “What is a miracle?” “Do things really happen ‘for a reason?’” “Are there ghosts?” “Do non-Christians go to hell?” “Must I believe that _______?” Participants can bring their own deep thoughts and questions for discussion. Adult Faith Formation – “Misused Verses”

<p><span style="color: #000000;">What does the Bible really say about the LGBTQ community? This is one of the hot-button issues within the church. The verses that answer these questions are not the most read or understood. </span><span style="color: #000000;">On February 8 and 15, Aliyah Kennedy will lead a discussion of the book   <i>Unclobber </i>by Colby Martin. Together, we will examine six biblical passages that are often called the “Clobber Passages.” These verses have been historically used by Christians as the basis of anti-LGBTQ theology. <i>UnClobber </i>reexamines what the Bible says (and does not say) about homosexuality in such a way that sheds divine light on outdated and inaccurate assumptions and interpretations. We believe that if we are to use the Bible as a guide for how to treat our neighbor, we should make sure that we read and understand it first. Ash Wednesday Service

It is once again our turn to host the service and reception with Grace and Bethany Presbyterian Churches and their pastors as our guests. </span><span style="color: #000000;">The service officially begins this year’s Lenten season and will include familiar hymns, a brief message, Holy Communion, and ashes for those who desire them. Scout Sunday Pancake Breakfast

<p><span style="color: #000000;">On Sunday, February 22, the Scouts chartered to LPC (Pack 115 and Troop 115) will celebrate Scout Sunday with the LPC congregation by hosting a pancake breakfast in Lawther Hall following the 10 a.m. service. </span><span style="color: #000000;">The Scout Law says that a “Scout is Reverent” and scouts of all ages promise to do their duty to God. One opportunity for scouts to do their duty to God is through service to others. Kenyon College Chamber Singers Concert

<p><span style="color: #000000;">We are excited to welcome the Kenyon College Chamber Singers to Lakewood Presbyterian Church. Kenyon College is a private liberal arts college in Gambier, Ohio. Founded in 1824, Kenyon College is the oldest private institution of higher education in the state and enrolls approximately 1,800 undergraduate students. Led by Dr. Benjamin “Doc” Locke, the Kenyon College Chamber Singers meet five times a week for rehearsal and are required to participate in performances and their annual spring tour (which LPC is privileged to be part of this year). Maundy Thursday Service

<p><span style="color: #000000;">We gather in the evening on Maundy Thursday remembering the last Passover meal Jesus had with his disciples. Following a brief sermon, we join together around a candle-lit communion table for a simple, quiet observance of the Lord’s Supper. The Lord’s Table is then made bare. Then follow four brief “Passion” readings from the Gospels. As candles are extinguished, passages are read recalling Jesus’ time of prayer and arrest in the garden, his trial before the Chief Priests and the Roman authorities, and his death and burial.
