The Presbytery of the Western Reserve
Because Calvin believed in the tendency of humans to sin, he was especially opposed to Bishops being invested with inordinate amounts of power. That is why Presbyterians emphasize the sharing of leadership, authority, and power among clergy and laity. Rather than Bishops who make decisions for the people, Presbyterians form regional groupings of churches called Presbyteries who bind themselves to each other and supervise one another’s ministries, including the calling and dismissal of pastors. Lakewood Presbyterian Church is a very active member and participant in the Presbytery of the Western Reserve which covers nine northeast Ohio counties.
